January 2008

The Makarios Scholarship/Theodore and Wally Lappas Award was established in 1983 and financed by the Theodore Lappas family.  The late Theodore Lappas was born in Limassol, Cyprus, one of eight children.  In 1920, at the age of 17 he emigrated to the United States in search of better employment prospects.   In 1934 he married Wally Kammerbauer, a native of Bavaria.
The Lappases have always been distinguished by their hard teamwork,    determination and an unparalleled  kindness in spirit.   Their hard work and   efforts shortly lead them to success in commercial real estate, i.e. shopping malls, etc.

In the summer of 1974 when the Turkish army brutally invaded and occupied Cyprus the late Theodore Lappas played a leading role in the establishment and financing of the Cyprus Children’s Fund.  Numerous children have benefited from the Lappas’ family dedicated efforts and financial support.   Along with other close collaborators and the then President of the Republic, the late Archbishop Makarios III, Theodore Lappas established the Makarios Scholarship Foundation to aid Greek Cypriot students who are studying in America.  He died in Florida on May 17, 1995 at the age of 92.  His wife, Wally, a great philanthropist in her own merit, died on September 17, 1997.   Their daughter, Miss Alexandra Lappas, who serves as the Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Children’s Fund continues their commendable philanthropic work.

This effort was spearheaded by Peter J. Pappas, current National Chairman and President of the Cyprus Children’s Fund Inc.  Mr. Pappas, a Cypriot American, is himself a prominent philanthropist and a successful businessman.  During the last two years additional donations were made through solicitations (mainly upon the initiative of Board Member Mr. Michael Anastasiou) in the form of real estate sale proceeds, donation of stocks, etc.

Two yearly scholarship awards are presented to students who are studying full-time in an accredited United States Institution.  Applicants may be of Greek and Greek Cypriot origin, with residence in the United States,  Cyprus and Greece.   Award categories include Architecture, Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Languages, Law, Medicine, Performing Arts, Science, Theology and other disciplines.  Major  donors may wish to indicate their preference for the award category.
